"你是谁 ?" (You are who?) asks this poster showing Chinese president Hú Jǐntāo. I don't know who put it up (or why), but its location near the birthplace of Karl Marx ensures that a lot of Chinese tourists will see it.

I actually saw the "Feuerwehr" (fire-fighters) in action two days ago, when three of those big fire trucks were parked outside a house near where I live, with firemen all over the place. I later found out that it had been a false alarm; someone fell asleep with the oven on and called them when he awoke to the kitchen filled with smoke. In the end, all the 21(!) deployed firemen had to do was turn off the oven and open a few windows. Better safe than sorry, I guees.

The Wall

On the west side of the river, between the Konrad-Adenauer-bridge and the Römerbrücke, you'll come across a long wall (actually the back of several buildings) that has a very old, run-down look to it, covered in graffiti, rusting doors, windows, pipes and such. Not the most romantic sights, maybe, but surely interesting, even aesthetic, if you look at it the right way.

I am going to start posting a daily Trier photo again soon, but until I do, I wanted to share some of the shots I did since I last posted here. Most of them will be nature photographs, with animals featured in almost all of them, and none of them will have been made in Trier.

And I begin with this short series of photographs showing a cat proudly presenting its prey. Yes, these are not the kind of cat and bunny-pictueres you might find on Cute Overload, but they're fascinating nonetheless.

You are going to see more of this particulary cat and her young over the next weeks, too. But no more hunted down bunnies, promised! ;)

If there's one place where you wouldn't want to have "Treppenschäden" (staircase damage), it's this one, about 162 Meters (about 530 feet) above the river.

Today I'm starting a series of posts - I'll try to do one each Friday - that gives you an impression of the city of Trier through a short video.

I recorded this yesterday, around noon, at the Domfreihof, the place in front of the Dom (cathedral) and the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady). You see a lot of tourists (even a guided group) and many more people that came out to go shopping or just enjoy the beautiful weather.

Sadly, the only reason that I was able to take this picture, and get as close as I did, was that the mouse was obviously not well. It didn't seem to notice anything around him, not even a bus driving by just a few meters next to him.

Actually I just wanted to photograph the Trier train station, with its big analog clock, but then this old, red Ente totally stole the show!

When I was a child, one of my neighbours had one of those (in bright yellow!) and I remember that I always found it to be a very strange car that I did not want to ride in! It just seemed unsafe to me, I guess?

A follow-up to yesterday's photo, here is a small group of Catholics that I caught, it seems, amused by something on the ground in front of the Trierer Dom (cathedral). What could they be looking at? Somebody's shoes? Maybe a small animal?

And don't you just have to love the guy in the background, drinking a glass of white wine? Doesn't he look a bit like God in Da Vinci's The Creation of Adam?

Yesterday morning, German nun Rosa Flesch was beatified in Trier, and all these seats that were set up in front of the cathedral were filled. But when I came across them in the evening, they were just a sea of empty chairs, a sight that I found very intriguing.

Fish-eye Porta Nigra

This picture shows a bit of a distorted reality, as it is stitched together using multiple photos, all taken from the same point, which causes things away from the center to appear slightly 'rounded'.

The Porta Nigra, of course, is the remaining front gate of Trier, built by the Romans in 180 AD. As usual, there's more about it on Wikipedia.

Windows of the Kaiserthermen

The Kaiserthermen (Imperial baths) were built around the year 300 for Roman Emperor Constantine. Today, what is left of them can be visited (with guided tours by costumed actors), is used as backdrop for concerts and plays, and at night is one of the most beautiful sights of the city.

Right between two of Trier's busiest streets - the Südallee and the Kaiserstrasse - lies a path for pedestrians and cyclists, aligned with trees on each side to block out the traffic. Every hundred meters or so are also benches like this one.

Also along this path (although not in the photo) are remains of the old Roman city wall that once surrounded Augusta Treverorum.
